Mulch has many advantages for your landscape. While mulch increases the curb appeal of your home, mulch also prevents loss of water from the soil by evaporation drastically helping your plants thrive. Mulch also reduces the growth of weeds, when the mulch material itself is weed-free. Organic hardwood mulch keeps the soil cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, thus protecting your plants from drastic weather. Organic mulch can also improve the soil structure. As the mulch decays, the material becomes topsoil. Decaying mulch also adds nutrients to the soil.
Pinestraw or Pine needle mulch also has many advantages. Roughly the half the price per sq. ft. compared to hardwood, pine needle color will only last around 6 months. A 3-inch layer of pine needles makes an excellent mulch for acid-loving trees and shrubs (Azaleas, Rhododendrons, Holly, Gardenias). Pinestraw is very attractive when fresh and allows air, water and nutrients to penetrate easily to the soil surface. It also decreases the likelihood of wood eating pests.
